GSRNE brought Chase in after receiving a call from a veterinary hospital employee. They told us his story, explained that he needed a new home, and they emphasized that Chase is one of the all-time, nicest, nicest German Shepherd Dogs ever seen at the hospital. Chase's foster mom says that Chase is a wonderful foster dog and she is really enjoying having him at her home.  He bonds very closely to the people he loves and really needs those special people in his life.  Chase is a dog with special needs who will give back so much more to anyone who adopts him!

He's a very affectionate boy who loves to play ball, go for quiet walks with you, or just be your friend around the house. He likes some little bursts of activity with you, and then is content to do whatever you do. He enjoys playing games, but doesn't pester you for those games like some dogs do. Chase gets along with most other dogs or ignores them, but he is unhappy about being with dominant male dogs. Chase loves the company of female dogs and has learned how to act like a gentleman around them.  Chase didn't know what to do with kitties when he first came to his foster home, but over time with some work, has learned to leave the (6!) kitties alone for the most part. He snuggles with one of the kitties of the household, and sometimes they do play some chase games. But he hasn't tried to hurt them.

Chase endured some health neglect growing up. Due to neglect from his previous owner to treat some problems he had with his ears, he is partially deaf. But he does have useful hearing. GSRNE has treated his ears since he came to us, and he has responded quite well!  Chase will need ongoing ear maintenance, regular bathing, and a special diet with supplements to keep him comfortable through out his life.  This sweet dog's foster mom worked on teaching Chase some hand signals as well as verbal commands, and Chase picked those up quite well. So he can respond to verbal commands or hand signals, whichever works best. He does have some arthritis in his hips (as we all seem to get eventually!), but only needs a little glucosamine in his food for that. He doesn't need any pain medications yet.

Chase is a dog who is not totally secure around all new people he meets.  He is very cautious when meeting unfamiliar people, mostly men and bouncy children.  He will belt out a few deep barks when he feels his comfort zone is being invaded.  He may be quite easy to navigate through a busy public place, but when a stranger walks directly towards Chase and makes eye contact, his shoulder blades drop and he casts a wary look.  If a well meaning stranger keeps walking towards him and reaches out to pet Chase’s head, he will make the decision to deeply bark, often stopping them in their tracks.  He doesn’t want to hurt anyone, instead just wants them to back off.   So when going out into the world or having a guest in your home, your eyes must always be on Chase to interpret his subtle body language and step in as a good leader when needed so that Chase feels safe.  If you are in charge, Chase won’t feel the need to engage in his barky behavior.  His foster family has discovered many ways to set Chase at ease in these situations.   Proactive management of both Chase and the people around him is necessary to be a good leader for this boy.

In foster care, Chase has completed a basic manners obedience class and will continue on to an intermediate class soon.  He functioned very well in class with other dogs and people in close proximity.  Chase also gets lots of practice meeting new people, and has come a long way with his issues.   He and his foster dad have bonded tightly, both of them enjoying one on one guy time together.

This is a dog for the type of person who wants a loyal, very loving companion dog. A dog who will just adore you, and you will adore him. He'd give you his heart and soul. If you're looking for a special dog to love, email Betsy at furlani@madriver.com
