Most people want a friendly, low-key, well-behaved dog to adopt. While many German Shepherd Dogs can be friendly, most need daily leadership work, attention work, and hard exercise from their families to behave as we all want them to behave. There is nothing wrong with this - those are some of the attributes you get that make for a good GSD. However, it's nice to find a lower-key, well-behaved GSDs right off the bat when you want to adopt, and that isn't always easy in this breed.

But  - if that lower-key, friendly dog is the kind of dog you love, the kind of dog you want, a dog who has GSD attributes, but will be happy to just be with you and be your gentle companion, you've hit the jackpot with this dog!

Meet Holling!  Holling is one of the sweetest dogs we've met in awhile. He's very friendly with people and enjoys being gently petted or just spoken to nicely. This dog loves 2-way communication (as most GSDs do), and he thrives on that kind of attention from his people. And yet, Holling is a senior boy whose exercise requirements are minimal - daily leash walks and following you around the house and fenced yard as you do your chores, gardening, or other activities would fulfill his exercise requirements.

Holling has been fine with people he's met while with us. He tends to ignore cats, which is a big plus! He prefers to be an only-dog, or to live with and be around friendly but quieter dogs that won't bounce in his face. He will bark at bouncy, "in your face" dogs or dogs that move in frantic, herky-jerky ways, especially if he's on leash.  Mostly, this is because Holling is an older boy and has some minor hearing and eyesight loss as a result of his age, so nutty/active dogs make him feel a little vulnerable.  However, he's not deaf nor is he blind. He is doing quite well!

Holling was a stray dog who was in bad shape when he was found: very, very thin, loaded with fleas, and he had some illnesses, too. He was exhausted. He was taken in by Animal Control and lived in a shelter for awhile. The shelter personnel de-flea'd him, cleaned him up, started feeding him regularly and kept him warm and dry. Everybody there fell in love with him, and he received extra love and pampering there during his stay. Since then, GSRNE has helped Holling to recover from his urinary tract infection, ear infections, greasy flaky skin, and he has gotten Glucosamine supplements. Now he's doing quite well, is limber, and gets around like a much younger dog!

His ears should just be cleaned weekly to keep him from getting ear infections again. This is an easy regimen to follow - he's cooperative for baths and ear cleanings. Holling is not on any special diets or medications other than Glucosamine supplements.

Holling has many virtues. He is a dog who will hand his heart over to you very quickly. He will be your gentle snuggle boy, your best quiet friend. Holling is looking for that special person for his GSD heart to love, in that wonderful low-key way. Are you that person he's looking for?
