Kita is an impressive-looking
adult male GSD who loves to carry a soft, squeaky toy around in
his mouth. This endearing trait offers a clue to his true
nature; while he looks serious and independent at first meeting,
he definitely has a sense of humor and clowns for your attention!
Kita’s former owner boarded him at a kennel when he was five
years old and just never returned - the owner literally abandoned
the dog and left the country. The kennel owner, who was never
paid, kept Kita for almost a year because he could not bear to
have this noble animal euthanized. But after awhile, he asked
GSRNE to step in to help.
When we first met Kita, his coat was dull and stiff, there was
a nasty hotspot on his tail where he had been licking and chewing
on himself out of boredom and loneliness from kennel life, and he
had an infection in both ears. His picture on our Website is
evidence of what a few months of TLC and some inexpensive
medication can accomplish; his glossy coat now shines, his ears
are healthy again and he’s too busy keeping his foster mom
company to make hotspots anymore!
Kita gets very attached to his own person and will be happiest
as an only dog. He can get along with some female dogs, but Kita
has so much personality, and is so large, you won't NEED another
dog! An experienced GSD person will be able to provide the
leadership and structure Kita needs in order to thrive and be the
best dog he can be.
This dog has strong prey drive and will happily keep the
squirrels, chipmunks and cats from cluttering up your yard!
However, he’s actually more of a medium-activity dog who likes to
go for walks; he has some play drive and he’ll dash off after a
ball that you throw too. Then he’ll dash back in your
direction…and keep going right on by, clowning with the ball and
teasing you! Using two toys could be the key to working on fetch
games with him. ;-) If you throw a toy for him in the house, he
will bring it back 2 or 3 times before settling down to chew on
it. So, he needs daily exercise, but doesn't need the very hard
exercise some GSDs do.
Kita’s most favorite thing is just to be with you. When you
take him for a ride in the car, he’ll sit proudly on the backseat
with his nose at the top of the window, checking the scents that
blow by. If you’re working out in the yard, he’ll want to be out
there with you in your safely-fenced area. When you’re inside,
he’ll be lying nearby with his stuffy toy between his paws.
Every so often he’ll pad over to lay his head in your lap and get
his ears rubbed. He’s a very affectionate dog and seems to want
to make sure he really is finally loved and appreciated for the
great dog that he is.
Kita is an astounding dog to have as a family member. However,
if you let him structure life in your home, Kita can also be a
territorial, pushy boy, running the show and doing as he pleases
if you are faint of heart. But in the hands of an experienced GSD
owner, somebody who appreciates and knows how to work with this
much dog, then this dog's charismatic magnificence and
tightly-bonded companionship will shine brightly out to the world
as the two of you become best friends. And as you walk with him
on a brisk sunny autumn day, watch him happily patrol for
chipmunks in the spring and summer, or while he relaxes with you
in your home as the snow falls, you'll wonder how you ever lived
without this incredible dog by your side.
