When you meet Chance, the words that come to
mind are "CUTE!" and "She's a little sprite!" And then the
thought hits you: "She carries herself like a princess." Then
inevitably, you think: "Boy, do I like this dog!!!"
Chance came from a shelter after her new owner turned her in
after only one month. They said that Chance had housebreaking
issues, but we haven't had this problem with her at all!
Chance was terrified of all the noise and barking in the
shelter and would shake in fear so people repeatedly passed her
by. The shelter asked GSRNE if
we had room for her, and we did. And now that we've had Chance
with us for her behavior testing period (and things have gone
quite well), here is what Chance's foster mom says about her:
"Chance has integrated herself very nicely into our household,
and is a dream to "own". She is well mannered and relatively
quiet (for a younger dog), and she is a real lady. Chance
doesn't beg at the table, and she gets along very well with our
young male Golden Retriever. When she plays, she does do a lot
of back-biting and neck grabbing, asserting herself over him
so she will be happiest with a submissive, tolerant playmate. She
does love playing with other dogs, though! [Chance will
probably do best with male dogs] She *will* growl at my male
dogs when she has a treat in her crate that she thinks they
want to steal, but otherwise, there have been no guarding
issues. And she is great with the cats!
Chance is wonderful with all people- she *will* bark when
someone knocks at the door, but is kissy and sweet when they
come in. She is a snow dog- I have some photos of her digging
in the snow, with her entire head buried!
So, that's where we are. An incredibly nice girl who would do
well with many families. OK with other dogs if introduced
properly, but she prefers to befriend easygoing, submissive
dogs. Fine with cats. No
counter surfing, no garbage grabbing, begging or other vices.
She will ask to go out, and she crates well.... a lovely German
Shepherd Dog."
We love hearing this kind of report from our
foster parents!
Chance is an active dog that loves move and play!
Unfortunately, she has a hip that was fractured and not
repaired properly when she was younger. Chance will need
surgery to correct it, but our veterinarians said it is best to
leave it alone for now because she can run and jump pretty
well. If we were to do the surgery right away, she would loose
some of her mobility. Buffered aspirin on days she overdoes
it (like on those snow days) helps if she is a bit stiff and
sore. After she has the surgery, Chance will be pain free. Her
hip will be a little looser but she will still have good
mobility to enjoy life with you. The orthopedic surgeon who
saw Chance was very impressed with her spirit and activity
given her hip. Everyone who gets to know Chance sees that she
is a really special dog.
