Duncan's Buddy says,

Duncan is an all-black male, one-year-old, playful and active German Shepherd.  He loves outdoor activities, like hiking, walking and playing with toys; and he enjoys sitting beneath the bird feeder in the yard of his foster home so he can watch the birds landing and taking off.

When he first came to GSRNE, along with six other black GSDs from the same breeder, Duncan was shy and easily startled.  His confidence has grown during his time in foster care, but he still needs low-key, gentle approaches to anything new.  He’s a quick learner, though, and he’s good at figuring things out for himself; he’ll follow a scent in the backyard, where a squirrel has trespassed, and go right to the tree the squirrel used and then look up to see if he can spot the critter.

Every morning, when he goes out for the first time, Duncan has a routine of stretching…first his back legs, then his front legs, then his neck and tail…his morning calisthenics.  In spite of his prey drive, he has learned to get along with the cats in his foster home.  He chased them at first, but he now understands “leave it” and will stop poking them to get them to run.

On his daily walks, Duncan is inquisitive about everything he sees.  He’s still timid when meeting people; he’ll back up and duck his head if someone goes to pet him.  If the person just stands still to chat with his foster Mom, though, he’ll sit patiently and wait.  He can get over-stimulated during his walks when too much is going on, and he should never be outside his fenced yard unleashed.

Duncan will do best with an adopter who is active and will continue helping him learn and adjust to new situations while keeping him safe.  He has some separation anxiety and would not do well alone for long periods; he does well in a crate but gets anxious after a few hours.  He travels nicely in the car and can go along on errands if he won’t be waiting alone in the car for more than a few minutes at a time.

He’s very “in tune” with his person and will settle nicely in the evening, after good exercise; he likes to entertain himself by throwing his Kong around, watching it roll and then pouncing on it to toss it again.  Duncan is growing into a playful and engaging dog!
