Akaysha, or Kay, as she is affectionately called by her foster parents, is a sweet, pretty,  bi-color female GSD. She came to GSRNE from a very rescue-friendly shelter in Maine. The best way to let you all know about what Kay is all about is to have you read her foster mom's words!:

What can I say about Akaysha?  We have fallen in love with her!  She is an absolute gem.  She is beautiful (strikingly so!), obedient, quiet, fun and playful, thoughtful, smart..... the  list goes on and on.  And at only 3 years old!

With visitors, Akaysha is polite and gentle. With Clint (foster dog brother), she definitely likes to be the top dog.  She seems to  enjoy being part of the pack but is very content to be by herself  as well.  She LOVES squeaky toys, especially balls, and occasionally even throws the ball back to you.  If you aren't up to playing, she doesn't mind - she will lay down nearby and chew on the ball or a bone.

She is very curious when she goes outside.  She stands at attention and listens to all the sounds that seem so unfamiliar to her.  She never chases the squirrels and she never barks at them.  In fact, Akaysha doesn't bark much at all.  Even in the house, Akaysha enjoys looking out the window to see all the squirrels running around.  She sits quietly and attentively.

Akaysha is learning to go for walks and does quite well towards the end of a walk.  You do need to be patient, waiting each time she pulls on the leash until she turns, looks at you and eases up on it.  A short walk can be time consuming, but she is learning.  She hasn't barked at other dogs she sees, just sits and waits on command until they pass by.

She knows basic commands very well.  There has not been a time that I've called her when she hasn't come to me.  We have concentrated our training on lots of praise rather than treats.  She has improved quite a lot with the "leave it" command.

Despite issues Kay has with her legs, she gets around exceedingly well. (
Akaysha had been in a car accident when she was younger, and had undergone three corrective surgeries. They didn't heal properly, therefore, she has arthritis in her elbows.) She moves with speed and grace, even though her front leg swings out a bit.  We don't let her jump when she plays and if she goes for rides in the truck, my husband picks her up.  She is an excellent passenger in the car - she will either sit up or lay down and she is quiet.

She thoroughly enjoys a gentle brushing and when she relaxes and rolls on her side, lets you rub her belly.  I actually think I saw her smiling last time we did this!!  She is still not thrilled at having her claws clipped, but all in all she is a very happy, cooperative, friendly girl, and she's looking for her forever home!
